Masters confirmed that JBL had bullied him early in his WWE career, highlighting what had happened on his first trip for Tribute To The Troops:

Oh yes, big time. And we happened to be talking about the Tribute To The Troops show. In my first year there we went to Afghanistan and they divided us into different groups. You know whoever they decide goes into the group and then the whole group is split up into three or four different groups.

So in my group I had Mick Foley, Trish Stratus, Carlito, JBL and Fit Finlay with us. JBL just tortured me the whole trip. He really just bullied and talked to me and was really just at the top of my head. Yes it was difficult. It was difficult because at this point I’m 20 years old again and I get mad at him and want to do something. But also, when is the right point to do something? You know what I mean? He’s a veteran. He has been with the company for a decade.

Chris Masters also talked about how he felt that things like this could make someone think and lose confidence:

Really, when it comes to a lot of these guys you’re talking about, like Bob [Holly] and JBL you know if you were a young man showing up at this time they would bother you. They would train the deep mind trying to make you guess yourself and lose your confidence.

Masters went on to say that it was possible that some WWE veterans could do such things to test the younger wrestlers and see what they were made of.
