The two studies, carried out by scientists in Denmark and Canada, provided additional evidence that blood type may play a role in a person’s susceptibility to infection and the chance of developing a severe episode of the disease, although the causes of this link are still unclear and require more research to determine the effects on the disease. And a Danish study found that out of the 7,422 people who tested positive for corona, only 38.4% of them were blood type O. Researchers in Canada also found in a separate study that among 95 patients suffering from a critical condition of corona, the percentage of blood type A or blood was higher. AB requires ventilators compared to patients with type O or B, according to CNN.

The Canadian study also found that people with blood type A or AB spend longer in the ICU, with an average of 13.5 days, compared to those with blood type O or B, who had an average of nine days.

The results do not substitute for caution

Commenting on the findings, Maybinder Sikhon, an intensive care physician at Vancouver General Hospital and author of the Canadian study, explained: “This finding does not replace other severe risk factors such as age, co-death, etc.”

She also confirmed that this does not mean panic or escape, saying: “If one of them is of blood type A, then there is no need to panic, and if you are of blood type O, this also does not mean that you can escape and go recklessly to crowded places.”

However, the results of the two new studies provide “more converging evidence that blood type may play a role in a person’s susceptibility to infection with the emerging virus,” according to Amish Adalja, a senior researcher at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security in Baltimore, who was not involved in either of them.

And an American company specializing in genetic research, indicated that its research reported that people with blood type O have more protection against the emerging virus than others.

And a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last June indicated that genetic data in some patients and healthy people showed that people with blood group A were more susceptible to infection, unlike group O.

It is noteworthy that many studies are still trying to delve into the corridors of this epidemic that appeared last December in China, and is still in effect pending the emergence of a vaccine that stops its course.
