A recent clinical trial in China for the coronavirus vaccine showed that it induces an immune response and is safe for humans.
The vaccine is called BBIBP-CorV and is being developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products, a subsidiary of the China National Biotec Group (CNBG).
While showing promise, widespread use cannot be confirmed until the third phase of studies is completed. Phase 3 studies are currently being conducted outside of China.
However, it has been approved for use in China on key workers and others at high risk of infection.
The test also showed that there were no major side effects, only mild ones like fever and pain where the injection was given, based on a report from The Lancet.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), BBIBP-CorV is one of ten other vaccines that have entered the third phase of studies. Phase one and two of the studies were conducted on 600 adults, which lasted from April to July 2020.
The results also showed that the increase in antibodies took 42 days in patients over 60 years of age, while participants ages 18 to 59 years took about 28 days.
Professor XiaoMing Yang of the Beijing Institute of Biological Products Company Limited said, “Protecting the elderly is a key goal of a successful Covid-19 vaccine as this age group is at higher risk for serious illnesses.
“However, vaccines are sometimes less effective in this group because the immune system weakens with age.
“It is therefore encouraging to see that BBIBP-CorV induces antibody responses in people aged 60 and over, and we believe this warrants further investigation.”
The tests were not conducted on children as the researchers want a full analysis of the data collected from the adult groups before testing on children.
Is there hope for the world to see a vaccine in late 2020? We may not know yet, but the results of these tests are encouraging.
We have to hold out and wait a little longer.
