Germany closes Berlin and major cities to contain Corona

From Saturday, major German cities, including Berlin, re-imposed a curfew, amid an alarming increase in the number of Coronavirus infections in a step that worries the economic sector.

In Berlin, nightclubs and restaurants must close their doors from Saturday evening between 23:00 and 6:00, a time period that often sees during the weekends tens of thousands of people flock to the capital’s nightclubs, which remain open all night.

The new measures constitute a severe blow to the city’s economy, which has already been severely affected by the closure of nightclubs for several months, knowing that the nightlife in the German capital is one of the most important components of its economy.

The curfew covers all stores except pharmacies and petrol stations, and will remain in place at least until October 31.

Frankfurt has taken similar measures that went into effect on Friday evening, with nightclubs and restaurants closed and the sale of alcohol banned between 22:00 and 6:00.

And Cologne, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous region, also announced similar lockdown measures, starting at 22:00, on Saturday morning.

For the seventh day in a row, the rate of injuries in Germany exceeded the threshold of fifty injuries per 100,000 people, which means that at least 50 new infections per 100,000 people were recorded, but the epidemiological situation raises concern in the city, with more than 400 new daily infections recorded, and Berlin has become Classified as “dangerous area”.

Berlin also decided to put tight restrictions on social media, so between 23:00 and 06:00, gatherings outside should not exceed five people, and during the day they cannot exceed fifty.
