Global PC shipments totaled 88.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2021, down 5% from the same period in 2020, according to preliminary results from Gartner. This is the first year-over-year decline after shipments of these devices grew for six consecutive quarters, while PC shipments reached 339.8 million units during the whole of 2021, up 9.9% from 2020.

The top three vendors in the global PC market remained unchanged during the fourth quarter of 2021, with Lenovo retaining the number one spot in shipments.

Lenovo’s global PC shipments fell by nearly 12% in the fourth quarter of 2021, the company’s first annual decline since the first quarter of 2020. This decline is attributed to the slowdown in the US market, weak supply and demand for Chromebooks, and issues with Lenovo’s global PC shipments. Supply chains, which in turn hampered Lenovo’s ability to provide computers to enterprise customers. These factors also contributed to the decline in HP’s shipments by 4% year-on-year, but the strong growth in the Asia Pacific market played a role in mitigating the decline in its shipment growth.

Dell gained a larger market share during this period after achieving greater growth rates for the fifth consecutive quarter. The company’s shipments exceeded 17 million units for the first time in its history, with strong performances in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

“The sharp downturn in the US PC market, due to persistent supply chain issues and a significant drop in demand for Chromebooks, led to lower shipments in the fourth quarter,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner. This is likely to be an indication of the end of the era of massive increases that exceeded all expectations in the level of demand for personal computers, which was led by the spread of the Corona epidemic.”
