US T-Mobile exposed to cyber security breach

The American telecommunications company, T-Mobile, confirmed that a “cyber security incident” had occurred in the United States.
“We have determined that unauthorized access to some T-Mobile data has occurred, but we have not yet determined whether any personal customer data has been involved,” T-Mobile said in a statement.
“We are confident that the entry point used for access has been closed, and we are continuing our deep technical review of the situation across our systems to determine the nature of any unlawfully accessed data.”
The company explained that “this investigation will take some time, but we are working with the highest degree of urgency. Until we complete this assessment, we cannot confirm the reported number of affected records or the validity of statements made by others,” according to “Al German”.
T-Mobile was last exposed to a cyber security breach in December 2020.
It is noteworthy that these financially motivated hacks are becoming much more complex, and they are growing rapidly. Data from SonicWall showed that attacks quadrupled during the pandemic, in part because the shift to remote work made employees more vulnerable, unlike when they were connected to more secure corporate networks.
In addition, hackers have turned away from asking for checks and are asking for hard-to-trace cryptocurrencies, which means that with the price of Bitcoin soaring over the past year, the ransomware business has become more lucrative. It has also become easier to launch attacks with little or no technological know-how given the growing market for “ransomware as a service,” in which hackers keep their ransom code, but rent it to others and take a share of any payments that come back from extortion.
And while known attacks have reached unprecedented levels, the story of what we don’t know – because there are so few rules around disclosure – could be much worse. Earlier this month, Brian Forendran, assistant director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation’s cyberspace division, and other officials at Internet agencies called for mandatory reporting rules about attacks where accurate data could be collected and analyzed by the US government.
