Bpost charges 1 euro extra per package for a month

As of next Friday – the day on which the annual Black Friday shopping festival takes place – Bpost will implement a temporary rate increase for its business customers. These customers pay an ‘end-of-year surcharge’ of 1 euro per package until Christmas Eve. The rate increase on shipping charges does not apply to ordinary residential customers.

The temporary price increase is not unexpected, claims Bpost. It has already been announced last September. ‘A price adjustment is always communicated and recorded before the start of the new year,’ says Bpost spokeswoman Barbara Van Speybroeck. It is the first time that traders or companies have had to cough up the surcharge.

During the first lockdown, companies already had to pay a temporary ‘crisis surcharge’ of 25 cents per package. Bpost was suddenly confronted with a peak in parcels that it normally only knows during the end-of-year period, ‘with the difference that staff members have dropped out due to illness or have to stay at home and that we have to take extra security measures’, it was said at the time.

Bpost breaks all delivery records in this second lockdown, as has been shown in recent days. On Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 520,000 parcels were delivered, the record from the previous lockdown, Het Belang van Limburg reported on Friday. It is expected that in the week between Black Friday and Sinterklaas, Bpost will break the milestone of 600,000 parcels per day.
