The evolutions of the MT-09, more versatility

While the MT-09 roadster benefits from a complete overhaul for 2021, Yamaha applies all the evolutions of its roadster to the versions that share the base, starting with the sport-GT Tracer 900 which, for the occasion, changes its name to to become Tracer 9.

Spotted two weeks ago on the roads, the Tracer 9 is now unveiled in detail in its third version after the 2015 and 2018 versions and promises us more lightness, power, versatility and technology.

The design of the Tracer has therefore been extensively redesigned with a casing that leaves room for large volumes and minimalist lines, as well as a brand new dual-optical LED unit hidden under the fairing, in line with what the we had known with the Tracer 700 in 2020 (Tracer 700 which follows the same renaming and becomes Tracer 7 in 2021).

On the other side of the high screen adjustable by 50 mm, the driving position has also been revised by integrating a dual 3.5-inch TFT screen to display information more clearly on both sides.

The Tracer 900 benefits from the same attentions as the MT with regard to its engine and its frame. We therefore find the new three-cylinder Euro5 890 cm3 delivering 119 horsepower and 93 Nm of torque housed in a more compact deltabox frame.

However, the Tracer adapts by opting for a 60mm longer swingarm to improve stability and boasts a wheelbase of 1,500mm. The engine mounts are also different from those of the roadster. The new 41mm fork is 30mm shorter than in the previous vintage and the rear shock is adjustable. There are also lighter SPin Forged rims now fitted with Bridgestone Battlax T32, the new tires released just a month ago.

In addition to its new engine, improved A&S clutch and new APSG electronic throttle, the Tracer 9 receives a new, smaller and lighter six-axis inertial unit, which provides control of traction control, SCS rear tire slip, LIFt nose-up control, or BC brake control. This assistance is also adjustable to different levels of intervention and associated with four D-Mode driving modes.

Already dynamic and sporty, the Tracer 9 also strengthens its road possibilities on several levels. Initially, Yamaha equips its Sport-GT with a standard cruise control. The manufacturer has also revised the fuel system to reduce fuel consumption by 9% and thus promises a range of 350 km without touching the 18-liter tank. Finally, it will now be possible to install side bags AND top case simultaneously to increase the carrying capacity, which was not the case previously (the rear loop was not designed to support this additional weight).

Tracer 9 GT

As currently in the range, the Tracer will also be accompanied by its better equipped GT version. In addition to benefiting from the same evolutions, the Tracer 9 GT is adorned with rigid side bags to match its paint.

Above all, the bike opts for new suspensions with the integration of the semi-active KYB Adctimatic Damper System (KADS) which continuously intervenes on the damping settings depending on the conditions and two modes.

That’s not all, since in addition, the Tracer GT is equipped as standard with a QSS shifter, heated grips and cornering lighting.

The Yamaha Tracer 9 will be available from March in red and gray / green for 10,999 euros. For the GT version, it will be necessary to add 2,000 euros.
