Over the past five months, tens of thousands of students in Germany have applied for loans totaling nearly 1 billion euros from the state-owned German Development Bank (KFW).
A statement from the German Ministry of Education for the Budget Affairs Committee in the German Parliament (Bundestag), which was reviewed by the German News Agency on Saturday (October 3), stated that during the period from May to last September, about 30,800 people were presented. Application for a student loan from the German Development Bank, totaling 919.6 million euros.
According to the data, this amount is four times the number of loan applications made by students in Germany in the same time period last year.
A spokeswoman for the German Development Bank said that 8,500 student loan applications, totaling 315 million euros, were submitted during the period from May to September 2019. The spokeswoman described the year 2019 as an average year, as the average number of student loan contracts annually is about 23,000 contracts.
Students in Germany, especially foreigners, face great difficulties during the period of the Corona crisis, the most prominent of which are housing problems and income disruption, especially since a large number of foreign students depend on small incomes from their temporary work, which has become difficult in light of the new conditions of the labor market.
