Skygazers, astronomers and space buffs are gearing up to watch an annular solar eclipse in the UAE on Thursday.
The eclipse known as the ‘Ring of Fire’ will be visible over the UAE skies in the wee hours of the morning of 26th December, Thursday. The rare phenomenon has not occurred in the UAE since 1847.
The event in its entirety is largely a partial solar eclipse, with the “ring” event lasting just a few minutes only in the Liwa region of Abu Dhabi. It will be visible at sunrise on the Arabian Peninsula (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar).
The annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s centre, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “Ring of Fire” or annulus around the Moon.
Skygazers are invited by the Dubai Astronomy Group to observe this rare event at the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre, Mushrif Park.
Event timing: 6pm to 9am
Location: Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre, Mushrif Park – Dubai
