Ninety-seven-year-old Emirati Fatima Muhammad Ali, a resident of Khorfakkan, passed away on Wednesday, after she had memorised about half of the Holy Qur’an in 17 years.

Her old age did not stand in the way of her effort to gain jurisprudence knowledge and memorise the Holy Qur’an, although she could not read or write.

Since she turned 80, she had been walking daily about 600 metres to the mosque, to memorise the Qur’an verses by listening. At the age of 90, she was unable to walk because of an ailment, so she continued the memorisation at home with the help of her children and her grandchildren until her death.

Her grandson, Yaqoub Al Raisi, said his late grandmother had 90 grandchildren from her four sons and one daughter, apart from their sons and daughter.

She contributed to building many mosques, digging wells, helping the poor, and helping the insolvent, Yaqoub added.

She was strong in memory and patient, as she endured the death of her husband 50 years ago, and the death of a son 20 years ago. She brought up six grandchildren of her deceased son, who died in a road accident with his wife and one of his sons. She worked throughout those years to contain them, educate them, until they all graduated from universities.
