Dr. Anwar Salam, CEO of Medical Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company Seha, affirmed that Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City is equipped with advanced technologies and devices, most notably the robotic surgeon which performs important surgical operations accurately, efficiently and quickly. Dr Salam added that the robotic surgeon contributes to completing surgeries in an hour, instead of 5, then the patient can be discharged from the hospital within a day instead of a week, with a very high success rate.

“The first robotic-assisted surgery was performed in Sheikh Shakhbout City in September 2020, on a young patient who suffered from a blockage in the tube transporting urine from the kidney to the bladder. The surgery was successfully performed.”

Dr. Faiq Rashid Jamali, a consultant surgeon at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, said the robotic surgeries are ideal in surgeries requiring high level of accuracy, as the automated system can be programmed to perform them with greater accuracy, and less pain and bleeding. The robot also reduces the recovery period, prevents infection and complications.

He added, “Surgeons in Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City use robots in prostate surgery, partial nephrectomy and pelvic surgeries, including rectal cancer surgery, rectal stenting in addition to upper gastrointestinal surgery, cardiovascular surgeries, benign and malignant abdominal tumours, obesity, gynaecological surgery, and urology.”

“Surgical teams have successfully performed 15 robotic surgeries during 2020. More surgeries will be performed during the coming period.” Dr Jamali added.

He pointed out that robotic surgery can be performed on a patient in a hospital by a surgeon in another hospital with careful coordination. This requires that a medical team should be there beside the patient’s bed, and the availability of a high-speed internet line, which transmits data at a very high speed.
