Maritime rescue teams at Sharjah Police managed to recover a cargo ship after it sank in Port Khalid in Sharjah, with a cargo worth more than Dhs500,000 last Friday evening.

No casualties were reported.

The operations room at the Sharjah Police General Command received a report around 5:30pm last Friday, stating that a cargo ship fully loaded with goods sank in Port Khalid in Sharjah.

Accordingly, maritime rescue patrols as well as police and national ambulance patrols rushed to the scene stated in the report.

The maritime rescue teams proceeded with rescuing the crew of the boat consisting of five people, who sustained no injuries, while the cranes were able to lift the goods completely and recover the sunk ship, which was scheduled to go to an Asian country after goods had been loaded.

Initial investigations revealed that overloading was the main reason for the sinking of the ship.

The maximum load of the vessel was estimated at around 300 kg but the cargo, which included electronics, bicycles and electric appliances, exceeded the ship’s loading capacity and caused it to sink.

It was found that the loaded goods were worth over Dhs500,000 and were insured.

The papers of the case were referred to the public prosecution for further legal procedures.
