Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - More than 150,000 people have had to quarantine in Abu Dhabi since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, officials have said.

Department of Health - Abu Dhabi said that was the total number of residents who had been held in a facility or monitored in their own homes.

The number includes many people who were found not to have the virus, but had to isolate as a precaution.

In total, the authority has 70 centres where people who may have come into contact with a coronavirus patient can be accommodated. Suspected cases can also quarantine at home, as long as they follow strict rules designed to stop the spread of the virus.

The health department converted Al Rahba Hospital into a special Covid unit with 80 rooms and 40 intensive care units, allowing people who share apartments and villas, or live in multiple occupancy accommodation, to quarantine or be treated safely.

Some hotels were also used to isolate potential cases.

Officials said various mental health support systems were used to check up on those who had to spend weeks isolating.

“The DoH is keen to provide the best healthcare services, raise the absorptive capacity according to the needs of the sector, and establish a clear working mechanism with a preventive framework to track cases, control infection and limit the spread of the virus,” the department said.

“These are common health practices that contribute to preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Isolation and quarantine are imposed on infected individuals or those who have had contact with an infected person, by separating them from healthy people in order to prevent the spread of disease."

At the weekend, Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre said it would place notices outside the homes of people who are undergoing quarantine.

The signs will explain that an individual inside the residential unit is under 14-day quarantine mandated by the government.

The notice will let neighbours know they are under quarantine so they avoid disturbing them, officials said.
