ABU DHABI - Select categories of UAE residents and citizens will be allowed to travel to certain destinations, based on whether they are low, medium or high risk, starting June 23, as part of the Emirati authorities' measures to ease COVID-19 restrictions.
According to the new protocols, travel will be permitted to some countries with medium risk but this will be restricted for people seeking health treatment, visiting immediate family or those on military, diplomatic or official business.
"The UAE will facilitate travel in line with all the appropriate precautionary and preventive measures in the face of the current Covid-19 pandemic," UAE news agency WAM said.
Emirati authorities see the easing of restrictions as the fruit of the effective measures taken to contain the pandemic.
"The UAE, five months after the detection of the first Covid-19 case, has become an inspirational model to be followed for proactive measures and effective crisis management," said Health and Prevention Minister Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais.
Public health caution remains in effect, however, especially for vulnerable segments of the population. People aged over 70 years old will not be allowed to travel. People with chronic diseases are also advised not to travel for their safety, while prospective travellers must test negative for COVID-19 and must quarantine on their return to the UAE for up to 14 days, Saif Al Dhaheri, spokesman for the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, said at the UAE government’s regular media briefing .
Airport authorities will check travellers for symptoms. Those with a fever or showing respiratory problems will be isolated and barred from travel, he added.
Dhaheri did not give a list of countries corresponding to each risk category, but said: "Travel will be allowed to certain destinations according to a strategy that has classified all countries of the world into three categories."
"The first is classified as low risk nations to which all citizens and residents are allowed to travel. The second is medium-risk nations to which only a limited category of citizens are allowed to travel in case of emergency, namely for necessary medical reasons, visiting first-degree family members, or for military, diplomatic and official missions. The third are high-risk countries to which travel is categorically banned," he explained.
The new measures came as the daily number of infections continued to fall. The Ministry of Health and Prevention announced on Friday that among more than 38,000 additional COVID-19 tests it had conducted, 393 new coronavirus cases were detected, bringing the total number of cases in the UAE to 44,145.
MoHAP also noted an additional 755 individuals have fully recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 30,996.
