Aden - Yasmine El Tohamy - Take all precautionary measures to prevent accidents, such as possible fall from high-rise residences, the authorities said.

This season, with more residents leaving their windows open to let the winter breeze in, the Abu Dhabi Police on Sunday tweeted a warning and reminded parents to put children's safety first.

Take all precautionary measures to prevent accidents, such as possible fall from high-rise residences, the authorities said. Children should never be left unattended anywhere, anytime.

Just recently, a toddler fell to death from an eighth-floor family apartment in Sharjah when her mother went to the washroom. In the last three years, as many as 15 children, aged between two and 10 years, died after falling from buildings in one emirate alone, according to reports.

The Abu Dhabi Police advise: "Windows and balconies should be tightly locked, unless an adult is present to ensure kids' safety. Even if the children are older, it's always better to keep the balconies locked when the parents are outdoors."

Metal bars can also be installed. "However, bars of good quality should be used, with narrow spaces in between." There should be a safe way to open or remove these bars in case of fire or emergency situations, authorities pointed out.

On top of these measures, the police reminded parents not to leave any piece of furniture near a window or in the balcony. "Young children may climb on them and fall to death," they warned.
