You’ll be able to use emoji reactions in Google Meet soon, a feature the company hopes will make people feel more connected, as emoji reactions in Meet will be available in the coming weeks.
Google Meet will also be available directly in Docs, Sheets, and Slides to facilitate collaborative sessions, and the threading built into Spaces will help keep conversations organized and contextual.
“Emoji help teams celebrate and give support, and it is important that they represent everyone,” Google said. One design choice made as a result of testing was the ‘rhythm’ of emoji interactions.
And when Meet participants click on an emoji, it pops up on the screen — and when multiple people do, they all do so at a specific timing, and it took the Google team a while to determine how that timing looked and felt.
“The whole idea behind emoji reactions is to enhance the feeling of connection,” said Caroline Postma, a user experience (UX) researcher at Google.
“And we’ve found that if the timing isn’t right, the whole sense of connectedness goes away,” Caroline and her team worked hard to make sure the right emoji selection was seamless.
“We wanted to include emoji that are universally understood, meaning the same or similar things across cultures,” Caroline said.
