The loophole provides the opportunity for hackers to obtain the latest browsing history of users, and some of their Google account data, according to what was discovered by FingerprintsJS.
The vulnerability exists in Safari 15 across all supported platforms, as well as third-party browsers on iOS 15 and iPad OS 15.
The vulnerability stems from an issue in the Safari app for IndexDB, an application programming interface (API) that stores data on users’ browser. The current vulnerability leads to a bug that attaches to database names rather than the content itself, and this would be enough for any malicious site owners to get the Google username of Safari users, discover their profile picture, and learn more about them.
FingerprintJS revealed that it first reported the vulnerability on November 28, however, Apple did not respond to it, with security patches.
The only solution to eliminate the vulnerability might be to either use a third-party browser on Macs, or block all JavaScript scripts.
