After 20 years, the magician Uri Geller lifts a ban he had initiated and others Pokémon-Print maps of Kadabra.
With the magic trick of bending spoons, Uri Geller enjoys great popularity then and now. Nintendo was also inspired by him and on this basis created the Pokémon Yungerer, known here in this country as Kadabra. Not only the bending of spoons, but also the name Yungerer, which is pronounced Yungeller, are reminiscent of the magician and illusionist. However, Uri Geller took this reference as an evil, occult representation and theft of his identity and sued Nintendo.
„Nintendo turned me into an evil, occult Pokémon character. Nintendo stole my identity by using my name and my signature image”
It was only 20 years later that Uri Geller apologized for his actions with children and adults. He lifts the ban by writing a letter directly to Nintendo’s chief department to give permission for the new kadabra to be printed.
„I am truly sorry for what I did 20 years ago, Kids and grownups I am releasing the ban.
I sent […] a letter to the chairman of Nintendo giving them permission to relaunch the Uri Geller Kadabra/Yungeller worldwide.”
As the reason for his change of heart, he cites the many e-mails he has received to this day, in which he is repeatedly asked to lift the ban.
„Due to the tremendous volume of emails I am still getting begging me to allow Nintendo to bring back…“
There have been none since 2003 Pokémon-Cards more printed with Kadabra, the other forms of development, Abra and Simsala, which are also parodies of magicians, are not affected. Uri Geller’s request was accepted by two representatives from Nintendo, but whether and when Nintendo will use Kadabra again is so far unknown due to a missing statement.
