Lidl teased the release of its 2020 Christmas commercial ahead of its debut on the Late Late Show tonight.
The supermarket chain posted on their Instagram the ad featuring toy elves giving a Lidl store a festive makeover after dark before airing during Ireland’s most watched program tonight.
The ad is part of a cross-platform TV, social, digital, radio and press campaign created by Gerry McBridge and James Carr of BBDO Dublin with the animators in the Piranha Bar.
Lyricist Gerry McBride said the song featured in the advertisement was taken from the 1960s musical MAME, which starred Angela Lansbury in its Broadway run and Lucille Ball in the film adaptation.
He said the main character in the musical celebrates Christmas early because she needs to cheer up and can’t wait.
“By the year we had we thought it would be a great song for the elves to sing and during the recording they wanted to change“ little Christmas ”to“ Lidl Christmas ”. It is difficult to argue with them. ‚
Lidl’s BBDO account director Sinead Lee said the agency wanted to create something “really magical” that “shows the quality of Lidl’s range and at the same time puts a smile on people’s faces”.
“Between us and Piranha Bar we created a visual feast that brings you something new every time you look at it. Customizing a popular Christmas carol gives it a real memorability. ‚
Aoife Clarke, Head of Communication and Marketing at Lidl Ireland, said: “We worked on it for a while, so Christmas came very early for us.
“We know 2020 has been quite a year, and we can’t wait to share a Lidl magic with everyone now that the season is really getting started. We would like to thank all the elves who make Christmas in Lidl so special. ‚
