Coach, the wait is over. Lugia’s signature train (Aeroblast) has just been moved to the GAME_MASTER file! Many coaches have wondered how good this move could be since it was first announced in March. Let’s see if the wait was worth it or not.
Disclaimer: Aeroblast statistics are subject to change prior to official release. Please note this. In fact, they have been changed between the time I originally wrote this analysis and now, so it may happen again
Lugia in Pokémon GO
Let’s take a look first Lugia’s statistics in Pokémon GO:
Lugia has one of the best DEF statistics throughout the game, period. However, it is his ATK stat is a little too low to shine in the PvE meta. For reference, top tier attackers usually have more than 250 ATK and a great moveset, so it doesn’t look too good for Lugia in that regard, even if Aeroblast is a very good move. We will see.
As an aside, make sure you have enough people to take them off Raids of Lugia. As you may already know, Raid Boss HP is fixed for each tier. The statistic that matters most when estimating how many trainers it would take to take down a raid boss is the DEF statistic, and Lugia’s is enormous. Check out our Lugia Raid Guide!
Aeroblast Lugia PvE-Analyse
Let’s get straight to the point: Aeroblast is a Move very good cargo in Pokémon GO.
Aeroblast has a 100 Energy costs, i.e. a one-stroke train (or a full-stroke train, whatever you want to call it). Its basic force is 180which is absolutely insane and the duration isn’t bad considering how hard this train hits. In fact, it’s a Solar Beam clone … but 1.5s fasterwhat is crazy!
One of the most common metrics used to compare cargo movements is DPS * DPEthat measures how good a movement is in terms of both damage per second and energy efficiency. Well, Aeroblast has a DPS * DPE from 95,29. That’s very very good. Almost on par with V-Create, Precipice Blades & Origin Pulse.
I’m not a huge fan of 1 bar load moves because you are likely to waste some energy firing if you don’t dodge or manage your energy properly. However, Aeroblast’s stats make up for it.
The question, however, is: will Aeroblast Lugia really be a top notch PvE attacker? The answer is probably not. Unfortunately for Lugia, The attack status is a little too low shine in the PvE scene. Even if it got access to Böe (It can only learn extra sensory and kite tailing as of now, neither of which is an amazing option for Lugia.) It wouldn’t mess things up too much, but it would definitely be one improvement (Niantic, please add Gust to Lugia’s Movepool). In fact, it ranks among common birds like Staraptor, Honchkrow, Unfeazant (and of course high-level attackers like Shadow Sky Attack Moltres and the Flying Megas). The difference between Moltres’ Act of attack (251) and Lugias (193) are probably enough evidence as to why Lugia cannot beat the best flight-type attackers in the game.
BUT, and that’s a big one, but Lugias TDO is so high that aeroblast somehow makes it usable. When combining DPS and TDO, Aeroblast Lugia is actually one solid choice (still significantly worse than Shadow Sky Attack Moltres and the Flying Megas, of course) for trainers who run out of resources or want to run the Wafu raids without worrying about the number of faints, but that’s about it.
Another thing to ask is: how relevant are flying attackers in Pokémon GO? If you want to defeat combat, grass, or bug raid bosses, just use other attackers like Psystrike (Shadow) Mewtwo, Sky Attack Moltres, or Reshiram instead. In fact, the only time Fly-Type attackers were useful was in Virizion Raids (and that’s because Virizion has one double weakness to flying movements), keep this in mind.
To conclude: Aeroblast is a very good move, Lugia Act of attack is only too low take advantage of this fact. If you want to use Lugia in PvE, you should definitely do it Aeroblast than move his cargo. Lugia does not have access to a double flying movesetwhich further restricts its use. Add Böe His movepool would improve things a little, but not enough to make him the ultimate PvE type of attacker.
Aeroblast Lugia PvP-Analyse
This is where things get interesting. Lugias Masse is absolutely insane so it definitely has the potential to shine in PvP Scene.
Aeroblast DPE is top notch. Before the Nerf (180 BP) it was actually the highest DPE charge movement in the game, and now it has an excellent DPE, but it’s no longer number 1 on that metric. Unlike other violent moves like Brave Bird, Close Combat or V-Create, this is not the case some disadvantage in using (apart from the fact that if it is shielded and you don’t get the boost you are wasting 75% of energy). But the high energy costs and the fact that Lugia’s best fast move is in PvP Dragon tail (which is not surprising for power generation) there are serious disadvantages to consider.
Lugia is mainly used in Master LeagueThis is countered in the Great League (Sableye, Umbreon, Mandibuzz, Dewgong, Zweilious, Galvantula, Lapras, A-Raichu, A-Marowak and Registeel) and in the Ultra League (Giratina-O) by numerous meta-relevant Pokémon / A , Gengar, Melmetal, Registeel, Articuno, Lapras …). However, this does not mean that it is unusable in GL and ULSo I would try to get at least one for these leagues with decent IVs for all leagues (beware, you need a VERY low ATK IV replay when trading to get one below the 1500 CP cap). Lugia has the potential to be one very decent surprise closer With the shields down, try to get yourself a decent one for these leagues if you can.
In terms of Master LeagueThe preferred moveset is Dragon Tail / Aeroblast and Sky Attack. As of now, PvPoke matters # 7 in der Master Leagueafter the last update of the GAME_MASTER.
Lugia has it highest stat product in the league, which is no joke. Although it may not seem intuitive not to run the hydraulic pump to cover, Aeroblast is so powerful that even if it is resistedIt can do almost as much damage as a neutral hydro pump (and boost your attack by 2 levels!). When that happens, your opponent will likely just admit and give you the W. So just use it Sky attack (as a “bait” move) instead.
As always, kudos to PvPoke for the simulation results:
benefits using Lugia in ML:
- Amazing matchups vs. Groudon (an ML staple), Conkeldurr, Machamp, Garchomp, and non-SB Mewtwo
- Solid matchups against Snorlax, Dragonite and Togekiss
- Although it can beat Kyogre in even shields (1-1, 2-2), it cannot be beaten in a shieldless scenario with the latest Aeroblast Nerf
- ONE +2 ATK Boost could just end the game right there or flip some important matchups
- Very nice performance as a surprise closer when the shields are down
disadvantage using Lugia in ML:
- The Dialga-Melmetal-GiratinaO core is unbeatable, this is one of the dominant metacores in the league
- Terrible matchup vs. Zekrom and Metagross
- Aeroblast takes too long charge but cause massive damage when it lands

Estimate Lugia
Although Estimate Lugia is NOT The fact that Shadow Mewtwo has already been released makes us think that Shadow Lugia (or may I say) XD001?) could follow in the not too distant future. And we can calculate its statistics and see how it would work. If you’re curious what the Shadow Lugia might look like, here’s a picture of it:
I know it looks absolutely crazy. Now there’s a reason I wrote “power”. Shadow Lugia (or XD001) made its debut in the Pokémon XD: Storm of Darkness Game for Nintendo Gamecube and has not been used in any other game since. So it is entirely possible that Niantic will follow a different route and change its design for the regular route with a shadow background. We have to wait and see.
Well, back to where we were. Shadow Pokémon have one 1.2x multiplier for your ATK statistic and a 0.833x multiplier to your DEF value. Some Pokémon don’t really benefit from this bonus because they do fragile, faints too often and can’t really take advantage of the significant increase in ATK. But it definitely is NOT Lugia’s case.
Lugia (in its basic form) has insane DEF statistic. If we apply the bonus to Lugia’s stats, that’s decent estimate in terms of its base stats 231/258/235. Combine these stats with a great loading experience such as Aeroblastand things can get interesting indeed.
Although it still wouldn’t reach the Sky Attack Shadow Moltres DPS level, the combination of DPS-TDO von Gust / Aeroblast Lugia would be off the charts. The difference in PvP wouldn’t be that significant as Lugia needs this mass to reach Aeroblast as it takes a long time to recharge.
Conclusions
- Aeroblast hat Top tier statistics both in PvP and PvE (but Lugia’s ATK stats hinder his performance in PvE)
- Overall, Aeroblast Lugia is one very good Pokémon
- Get a hundred (or a hundred) Lugia if you can. That thing has very solid potential Master League and in the worst case scenario, you could use it on certain raids as well
- If you’re into PvP, try to find a trading partner who will re-roll Raid IVs and get an Aeroblast Lugia with low ATK IVs for GL and UL. Lugia may have some niche uses in these leagues and in the upcoming themed cups so it’s always nice to be prepared for any eventuality
- Böe would be a welcome addition to Lugia’s Movepool. Niantic, if you’re reading this please add it ????
- Estimate Lugia has insane potential in the future
