Despite being a PS5 launch game, Demon’s Souls does not support ray-traced graphics due to resource allocation.

Thanks to its integrated Navi RDNA 2.0 GPU, the PS5 is able to advance ray tracing. However, that doesn’t mean every game will use them. Remember, developers have full control over how they use the next generation of energy. Some games can achieve variable perf goals like 4K 60FPS or 4K 30FPS or 1080p 60FPS with ray tracing effects. Ray tracing typically comes with certain performance costs that significantly affect resolution and FPS.

The next generation will significantly increase performance and give developers more tools to work with, but resources are still limited. This is the case with Demon’s Souls, which do not support ray tracing due to the performance drop. In short, Sony Japan Studio did not enable the ray tracing function as it interferes with other functions.

In a recent interview with Level up, Creative Director Gavin Moore explains that ray tracing just wasn’t part of the game’s original vision:

“Like any other graphics enhancement, it comes at a cost. If we had implemented ray tracing in the game, we should have left something out. Game development only has a limited time. “
