Office 365 users now have access to unlimited available recipient email addresses after the feature was added to Exchange Online. The addition was the number one requested by Exchange administrators through Microsoft’s UserVoice site.

Now Exchange Online users can use plus addressing, which can be used to create custom, unique e-mail addresses that are related but different from their regular address.

“Plus addressing allows users to dynamically create unique email addresses that send messages to a user’s mailbox but are easily distinguishable from messages sent to the user’s regular email address,” explained the Microsoft Exchange team. “There are two main use cases for this. Some customers want to filter incoming email and move certain messages to their own folders. Other customers have business solutions (such as support ticketing systems) that add a case ID to an email address to keep track of support threads. ”

A big plus

One of the most exciting aspects of this new feature is the ability to filter incoming messages, as well as the extra control users have over their inbox. For example, you may want to add a plus address before signing up for certain marketing materials. This way, any relevant messages you receive can be put in a bespoke folder. Not only does this make it easier to organize your inbox, it also lets you know how spam messages got your email address.

Although plus addressing is disabled by default, administrators can easily enable it through Exchange Online Powershell by running the following command: Set-OrganizationConfig -AllowPlusAddressInRecipients $ true

However, a potential problem has been identified. Since Exchange Online already supports e-mail addresses that contain a “+”, activating plus addressing can mean that these addresses no longer work. Support for Plus addresses was originally announced at Microsoft’s Ignite conference last year, but it wasn’t introduced until last month.
