Although the rush to cryptocurrency mining seems to have subsided significantly in recent years, the industry is still relatively booming. With PayPal’s announcement that it will join Bitcoin, Bitcoin has just seen a positive surge in popularity. AMD could be releasing its Big Navi in just a week, but these recent developments (as well as some fascinating results) could indicate that AMD is looking for a way to use some of its older RDNA cards as important pieces of the prime cryptocurrency market.
Interestingly enough, Phoronix found the “navi10 blockchain SKU” while searching the Linux drivers. This could indicate a completely different SKU for a Navi graphics card with an emphasis on cryptocurrency mining.
Based on the RDNA 1.0 architecture, it would contain 2,560 stream processors and 40 CUs. On the graphic display side, however, it would be a bit overwhelming if the Display Core Next (DCN) and Video Core Next (VCN) engines were disabled.
AMD already uses the Navi 10 silicon for at least four models of Radeon graphics cards, such as the Navi 10 XT and the Navi 10 XL in the Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Radeon RX 5700.
If these cards actually arrive, it probably won’t be before 2021. However, AMD could alternatively decide to consume the rest of the Navi silicon before the Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs are announced during the upcoming stream.
AMD hasn’t announced anything about this yet, but there is an upcoming stream from the manufacturer starting October 28th. We may then learn something about this potential card or at least an indication of whether this is possible that the “navi10 blockchain SKU” is actually an indication of an additional product.
