Google Pixel 5 for review

Google is officially out of the flagship game and is focusing its efforts on the middle range. Last year’s Pixel 3a series did surprisingly well in an area where previous devices didn’t: actual sales, so Google obviously thought if two phones worked well, three could be great. Just two weeks ago we saw the debut of the first 5G pixels with the Pixels 4a, 5G and Pixel 5, and now the latter has adorned our hands in its cool, mint green Sorta Sage color and these are our first impressions.

The first thing you notice about the Pixel 5 is the metal finish. It is a special coating made from recycled aluminum, which thanks to the structured surface feels very good in the hand. It also provides excellent grip. In terms of size, it is almost identical to the Pixel 4a despite the 0.2 inch larger display and the larger camera cutout on the back. Newer Pixels have gone for a power button in a different color, but the Pixel 5 has a glossy finish to contrast the device’s matte color.

The contents of the box are a typical Pixel affair – an 18W charger, USB-C to USB-C cable, SIM ejector tool, and USB-C to micro-USB adapter -Dongle. The Pixel 5 comes with the same old 12.2 MP primary camera with 1.4 µm pixels, f / 1.7 lens and OIS. It is paired with a first for the line 16MP ultrawide sensor f / 2.2 aperture and 1.0um pixel size. We’re excited to see how the ultrawide shooter performs in our full review. There are also 4K video at 60 frames per second, another first for Google phones.

The Pixel 5 comes with a 4,080 mAh battery, the largest in a Pixel phone to date. In combination with the energy-saving Snapdragon 765G, this should result in a solid battery life. It also performs wireless and reverse wireless charging. That’s all we can share right now. Look forward to our detailed written evaluation.
