The Côte d’Ivoire national team has called up its player, Wilfried Zaha, while Cheikh Kouyate will join the Senegal team, from the ranks of the London Eagles.
Vieira spoke at the press conference, saying: “I am not surprised that these players were called up to participate in the African Nations Cup, we knew that and I am not surprised that Zaha was called.”
Regarding the African Championship, he added: “I respect and understand the passion and importance of players representing their country, and therefore I will not stand before any player to participate in the African Nations Cup.”
And he continued, “I believe that the championship should be respected more, because it is as important as the Euro.”
And he added, “Maybe it is important for journalists to go to cover the tournament more and interview people who really understand what the tournament represents for each of them.”
“When you talk about Senegal, I don’t think people will really understand if Sadio Mane or Cheikh Kouyate does not represent their country. If there was more coverage of that competition, I think people would understand more how important it is for the African continent.”
The Nations Cup begins on January 9 and ends on February 6.
The Eagles occupies eleventh place in the English Premier League standings with 20 points from 17 matches.
