But in a memo sent by the FIA after qualifying today, FIA technical representative Joe Bauer revealed a breach in the DRS system on Hamilton’s car.
“The revised positions of the upper rear wing component were inspected on car number 44 in line with Article 3.6.3 of the F1 Technical Regulations for 2021,” the memo reads.
“The minimum distance requirement has been met. However, the maximum distance requirement of 85mm, when the DRS system is activated and tested in accordance with Technical Directive TD/011-19, has not been met.”
And he continued, “I will pass this matter over to the observers for consideration.”
If Hamilton’s car is deemed to have broken the technical rules, his time will be removed from qualifying, leaving him at the bottom of the short race grid.
Hamilton had already received a five-place penalty from his place in Sunday’s race after Mercedes opted to change his engine ahead of this weekend.
