OFFICIAL: Kaizer Chiefs to face Wydad Casablanca in Cairo

- Yasmine El Tohamy - Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca have announced their CAF Champions League clash with South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs will take place in Egypt.

The two sides were set to face each other on Saturday in Casablanca, but Chiefs were denied Moroccan visas due to COVID-19 issues.

Therefore the game got postponed, with the Confederation of African football confirming that the game to be played at a neutral venue.

Egypt was the country of choice as Wydad Casablanca announced the decision on their official page, while thanking the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports for their cooperation.

The game will take place at Al Ahly’s El-Salam Stadium in Cairo on a day between February 16 to 20; however, it’s unlikely that the game will be played on the 16th due to Al Ahly playing Al-Merrikh SC on that day at home.

Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad Casablanca are placed in Group C alongside Guinea’s Horoya and Petro de Luanda of Angola.

Kaizer Chiefs hadn’t played in Egypt since March 2002 when they faced Al Ahly in the CAF Super Cup, losing 4-1 thanks to goals from Khaled Bebo, Hossam Ghaly, Sayed Abdel-Hafiz, and own goal from Brian Baloyi, while Cyril Nzama scored the Chiefs only goal.

Meanwhile, Wydad are no stranger to playing in Egypt, having just suffered a 3-1 defeat to Al Ahly only last October in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
