Brazilian club Palmeiras was the obstacle between them and a place on the podium as they aimed to grab the bronze medal for the second time in history after the 2006 version.
The game headed into penalties following a 0-0 draw, with Mohamed El-Shennawy saving two penalties, leading the Reds to a historic achievement.
