Saint-Etienne President surprised for failed Mostafa Mohamed move

- Yasmine El Tohamy - Saint Etienne chairman Bernard Caïazzo has expressed his surprise over the failure of signing Egypt striker Mostafa Mohamed from Zamalek in the January transfer window.

Turkish giants Galatasaray land managed to land Mostafa Mohamed on a one-and-a-half-year loan deal for a fee of $2M.

They have the option to make the deal permanent for an extra $4M until December 31, 2021; however, it’s subject to Zamalek’s approval.

The 23-year-old striker made his debut with the Turkish powerhouse in their league game against Istanbul Basaksehir. He came on as a substitute and managed to score a penalty in his side’s 3-0 victory.

Before his Galatasaray move was sealed, Mohamed was very close to signing for Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne, but the differences between offer and demand stalled the deal.

“Everyone is suffering from a financial crisis at the moment, how did Zamalek accept $2M offer when we made a $5M one? And let’s be honest, Galatasaray doesn’t pay quickly and flexibly,” Caïazzo said.

“To negotiate personal terms with Mostafa Mohamed, they had to sell a player, and they want to sell another, the Algerian Sofiane Feghouli.

“Mohamed is a great player. If he had stayed at Zamalek until the end of the season then all clubs would have rushed to buy him.

“Everyone will watch him during the Olympic Games, that’s why we insisted on bringing him in the winter transfer window, he wanted to join Saint-Etienne.”

Mohamed’s performances left an excellent impression on the Ligue 1 side’s president that he now will advise his club directors to keep an eye on more talents in Egyptian football.

“Egypt is full of good players; it is the best country in North Africa and Africa as a whole. I would like us to supervise the Egyptian players, but it’s not my job,” Caïazzo added.

“Maybe I will instruct our scouts to follow the players in Egypt. Egypt is a great country,” he stated.
