Mohamed Sherif extends Al Ahly contract to end rumours

- Yasmine El Tohamy - Mohamed Sherif has quashed any concerns over his Al Ahly future by signing a new contract extension with the African champions.

The 24-year-old had joined Al Ahly in January 2018 from Wadi Degla, but failed to secure a spot in the starting line-up and was sent out on loan to ENPPI in August 2018.

A remarkable season with the Petroleum club, which saw him finish second in the Egyptian Premier League top scorer leaderboard with 14 goals and five assists, encouraged the Reds to recall him back.

Sherif had an impressive start to the 2020/21 season, starting the first four league games, in which he scored three goals and assisted one, before being dropped to new signing Walter Bwalya.

He managed only 58 minutes across the last three games, which led Al Ahly legend Ahmed Belal to accuse Pitso Mosimane of destroying the rising star.

Moreover, rumours emerged linking Mohamed Sherif with a club exit, especially that his contract was due to expire in July 2022.

Portuguese side Sporting Braga was believed to be interested in signing the forward on a loan deal until the end of the season, with an option to buy.

However, Sherif put an end to all these rumours by signing a new two-year deal which will keep him with the Reds until the summer of 2024.

Since joining Al Ahly, Sherif has scored seven goals while assisting five in 21 games, helping the club to win two Premier League titles.

He will hope to earn more trophies, starting with the Club World Cup, which will see the Reds face Qatari side Al Duhail in the opening game.

On the international level, Sherif made his Pharaohs debut last November and managed to score in his only game with them, which came in an away 3-1 win over Togo in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.
