Thank you for reading the news about HANDBALL: Cape Verde withdraw against Germany due to COVID-19 and now with the details
Dubai - Yasmine El Tohamy - The IHF have confirmed that Cape Verde suffered a 10-0 defeat against Germany due to insufficient players as a result of a COVID-19 crisis.
Cape Verde were at risk of forfeiting the 2021 IHF World Championship and were almost prevented from travelling to Egypt because of a COVID-19 outbreak in Nazaré.
The Blue Sharks, however, managed to travel with an 11-man squad and kicked-off the World Championship with a 34-27 defeat against Hungary.
Following the game, two Cape Verde players tested positive for COVID-19, meaning that they have insufficient players to play against Germany on Saturday.
According to the tournament’s regulations, each team needs to have a minimum of 10 players including one goalkeeper.
The IHF had issued a warning to Cape Verde about the regulations ahead of the encounter and were ultimately given no choice but to award Germany the victory and two points.
“In case Cape Verde do not meet the provisions mentioned in the regulations, the match between Cape Verde and Germany will be cancelled, with Germany automatically winning the match 10:0,” the IHF had said in a statement.
