Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani scored early and fellow striker Luis Suarez converted a penalty in the second half, his fourth in three games for his country, when he beat Colombia 3-0 in Friday’s CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.

Cavani got the opener in the fifth minute after Nahitan Nandez did the hard work in midfield by robbing the ball and getting him to take a low right footed shot home.

Suarez increased the lead nine minutes into the second half when he scored a goal after a Jeison Murillo fall against Rodrigo Bentancur.

Darwin Nunez finished the scoring after 73 minutes when his pot shot hit the diving David Ospina from 25 yards.

Yerry Mina was sent to Colombia after a second yellow card in the last minute of the game to end a miserable afternoon for the home team.

Suarez’s goal was his 63rd international appearance after scoring twice in the 4-2 loss to Ecuador in Uruguay and in the 2-1 win against Chile in the opening qualifiers last month.

The win puts Uruguay to six points after three games, while Colombia, who beat Venezuela and moved to Chile in their first two games, have four.

The top four teams in the 10-team South American group will automatically qualify for the final in Qatar 2022, and the fifth-placed team will enter an interregional playoff.

Uruguay is now traveling home to face Brazil on Tuesday when Colombia will travel to Ecuador.
