Fernando Alonso told Sky Sports Williams driver George Russell he was his future pick among the sport’s emerging young drivers.

39-year-old Alonso is back in the paddock at the GP in Emilia-Romagna this weekend as he prepares to return to sport with Renault next season after two years from the start.

The Spaniard sat down for an interview with Sky F1’s Simon Lazenby – which will be broadcast in the racing show on Sunday from 10.30 a.m. – and one of the questions he was asked was to identify who he rated the best among the new generation of drivers on the grid.

There are several talented young stars to choose from, but Alonso explained why Russell in particular caught his eye in his time outside of the sport.

“I think there are very talented drivers in Formula 1 now,” said Alonso, who started his own career at Minardi in 2001 before moving to Renault.

“They all came with very good preparation and driver academies that encourage performance and talent and help them from an early age. Now they are doing their job.

“Of all of them, George Russell is the one who surprises me every weekend. How he drives the Williams. No mistakes. I’m really surprised at its natural speed.

“So if I have to say a name, Russell will be my choice for the future.”

The 22-year-old British driver Russell joined the grid as the reigning Formula 2 champion last year. Although his Williams car didn’t allow him to fight for points, he still has to be overtaken by a teammate in F1 after 33 races.

He also impressively completed the second qualifying phase, the second quarter, seven out of twelve times this year.

Russell has a three-year loan from Mercedes, who are managing his career, and will inevitably fight for the next vacant spot on the F1 World Championship team.

Recent speculation that he might lose his seat to Sergio Perez, a free agent, at the end of the year was ended by Williams at Imola on Friday when the team confirmed Russell and Nicholas Latifi as their 2021 drivers.

Russell, who triumphed in F1’s esports series during the lockdown, took part in a fun but highly competitive quiz for Sky Sports F1 along with three of his longtime friends, racing rivals and Twitch fans.
