El-Gaish goalkeeper confirms Al Ahly negotiations

Thank you for reading the news about El-Gaish goalkeeper confirms Al Ahly negotiations and now with the details

- Yasmine El Tohamy - Tala’a El-Geish goalkeeper, Mohamed Bassam, revealed whether or not he entered negotiations for a possible move to Al Ahly and discussed his first call-up.

Bassam’s season with Tala’a El-Geish was impressive to say the least. He managed to help them sit 10th in the Egyptian Premier League, for now. While leading the sixth strongest defense in the league, having conceded just 34 goals in 33 games.

The 29-year-old also kept the second most clean sheets in the competition this season (11), sharing the record with Zamalek’s Mohamed Abogabal, Entag El-Harby’s Amer Amer and Mahmoud Gad of ENPPI. They all sit behind Al Ahly stopper Mohamed El-Shennawy (24).

Since becoming a regular starter for El-Geish in 2017/2019, Bassam has been steadily improving, keeping at least 10 clean sheets each season. This hasn’t gone unnoticed as he became a target for many Egyptian clubs.

One of the clubs believed to be interested in the goalkeeper are Cairo giants, Al Ahly, who reportedly started negotiations with his boyhood club. Talking to OnSport radio station, he stated that these rumors were true but said that there was nothing official yet.

“A couple of days ago Tala’a El-Geish received a call from some Al Ahly representatives in order to sign me. Until now it seems like there’s nothing official but I hope that the negotiations will be successful in order to fulfill my lifelong dream,” he confirmed.

“Playing for Al Ahly is an honor for any player and God willing I will get to achieve my dream. I still have two years left on my contract with Tala’a El-Geish but I was promised when I renewed last year that they would let me go if I receive a distinguished offer from one of the top clubs.

“I think they will keep their promise, they consider me as one of the team captains and appreciate my efforts. And of course, I want them to benefit financially because of the role they played in my career.

“It’s unlikely for me to move to Zamalek, they haven’t been in contact with my representatives. There were some negotiations before they acquired Mohamed Abogabal and Mohamed Awad. So moving there while they have four great goalkeepers is quite difficult,” he added.

Bassam helped Egypt’s U-23 team qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, but never got to represent the Pharaohs since.

He will now get the chance to make his first senior debut after being included in Hossam El-Badry’s preliminary squad, something he believes is long overdue.

“Thank god, it was only fair for me to be selected by the coaching staff. I was confident that the staff appreciate my hard work, especially when Ayman Ayman Taher [Egypt’s goalkeeping coach] contacted all the goalkeepers in the league,” he explained

“Rather than calling me just to praise, he would talk to me about my shortcomings so that I can overcome them. I will never forget the role Sayed El-Swerky, Tala’a El-Geish’s goalkeeping coach, played in my career.

“He’s a man who is working away from the spotlights and I feel that he’s deeply wronged. He always makes sure to focus on my mental preparation before the technical part,” he continued.

Bassam is now on the path of completing a historic feat with Tala’a El-Geish, who qualified to the Egypt Cup semi-finals thanks to his heroics in the quarter-finals penalty shootout against Pyramids.

“We’re 180 minutes away from lifting the Egypt Cup trophy. We gained a lot of condensing after beating Pyramids and we’ll be playing without any pressure. Any team can win this title and we dream of lifting it for the first time in the club’s history,” he concluded.

Tala’a El-Geish have one more game left before the end of their Egyptian Premier League campaign against Al Ahly next Saturday. Meanwhile, they’re also waiting to see the winner between Zamalek and FC Masr to discover their semi-finals opponents.
