Mother Earth and Snowfall, who were incorrectly saddled while running in Group 1’s Fillies’ Mile, swapped placements but were not disqualified after the BHA admitted the rules did not allow it.

Confusion followed the run of the Newmarket race that month as the result was polled on social media. It was pointed out there that Snowfall, who had apparently exceeded her chances of third place with 50: 1, looked more like her stable mate Mother Earth, who had finished eighth.

After being made aware of the concern, Aidan O’Brien, who was out of Newmarket and who claimed he had not seen the race, notified the stewards of an obvious mix-up and attributed it to a team of Ballydoyle staff who based in the UK are a result of the coronavirus pandemic and are unfamiliar with the horses.

As a result of the mistake, Mother Earth and Snowfall had ridden the wrong jockeys and from the wrong stands, but since they were the correct weight and had competed in the race, the BHA announced that the rules did not allow disqualification and instead the result was changed accordingly that Mother Earth is third and Snowfall is eighth.

In a statement, the BHA said: “Saddling the right horses for a race is the responsibility of the trainer. An investigation into incorrect saddling of horses has not yet been completed, which is why the BHA will not provide any further comments on this at time.

“The reasons for a possible disqualification are specified in the racing rules, are specific and do not include horses that start at the wrong starting positions or carry the wrong jockey. Because the horses that ran in the race were properly reported and of the correct weight. The only possible reason for disqualification would be if the horses were the subject of fraudulent practices.

“Therefore, the rules do not offer any reason for the disqualification of the horses until the result of the ongoing investigation. In this case, however, the rules will be re-evaluated to determine if there should be any additional reasons for disqualification. “

In addition to reviewing the rules on disqualification, the BHA plans to investigate whether a revision of race day procedures is needed to ensure that future errors are discovered.

The BHA said, “In general, the BHA is also reviewing the impact of the incident to assess whether further changes can be made to the relevant procedures for Race Day, using the new Race Day structure as additional protection against trainer errors and to minimize them the risk of such an event occurring again. “

A number of bookmakers paid off the result of the race, regardless of whether the contestants supported Snowfall, Mother Earth or Fountain, finishing fourth.
