Van Dijk walked out of the hospital on crutches on Saturday night after examining the suspected knee injury he dealt with an unpunished duel by Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the opening stages of the 2-2 Merseyside Derby tie at Goodison earlier in the day had drawn.
Liverpool are waiting for the test results to determine the extent of the damage. The Premier League champion has to be prepared for the fact that he can do without his talismanic defender for a long time.
Thiago Alcantara has also been screened for a potential knee problem after being caught on the red card by Everton striker Richarlison.
But Van Dijk is Liverpool’s bigger concern and Robertson said, “To be honest, I’ve never seen it. I just saw Virg go down.
“But the guys when they walked in at halftime said it was a shocking challenge. So these are two they got us through with.
“I can’t comment on whether or not Pickford meant it. I think he’s an honest boy and I don’t think he would have done it. ”
“But it’s not looking good for Virg and I hope he comes back as soon as possible and hopefully the scan may not show what the guys are thinking.”
Robertson added: “Losing a player like him is always difficult, but it gets a little tougher because of an incident like this.
“Look, unfortunately that’s part of football. It’s part of derbies, it’s part of life. We’ll all take care of it, we’ll all support Virg no matter how long he’s been out – hopefully not long as I said. ”

Liverpool were denied a dramatic late winner when VAR sidelined Sadio Mane before crossing to goal for Jordan Henderson.
The Reds, who had led through Mane and Mohamed Salah twice, also saw Pickford work a miracle to deny Joel Matip before Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored Everton’s second equalizer.
Speaking of the game, Robertson said, “It’s obviously disappointing and I think we will be the more disappointed team.
“The game was there for us, we created enough chances. We thought we stole it in the end and then Sadio’s toenail might have been sidelined, but that’s exactly what VAR brings. Onside, offside, it’s clear, so unfortunately it doesn’t matter, he’s offside.
“It’s always hard to take when you think you’ve won and you’re so close and things like that. But we take one point and move on. ”
Everton v Liverpool – Reds reaction
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Robertson said: “Goodison is never easy to find. Everton have improved so much that they have made some good signings and obviously have a fantastic manager.
“They’ll be up there in the season, certainly in the top half when they weren’t the last two seasons.”
