Sometimes in boxing things just don’t add up.
And on Sunday (AEDT), fans and experts alike scratched their heads in a 12-round showdown for the WBA inter-continental super-lightweight title between Lewis Ritson and Miguel Vazquez.
Against a crafty veteran in Vazquez (42-9-0) in Peterborough, Ritson should be too much. And while the British boxer (21-1-0) scored the split decision victory, it was difficult to find anyone other than the two judges who scored in his favor and believed they won the fight.

“Is [Vazquez] has completely and completely taken it out of circulation, “said Matthew Macklin in a comment.Macklin, who scored the bout 118-110 in Vazquez’s favor, added, “I’ve just watched Miguel Vazquez rethink, outmaneuver, rework, outbox and outland [Ritson]. ”
Ritson’s Corner was consistently – and after the fight – extremely confident that their fighter had done enough.
“There is only one winner,” said trainer Neil Fannan to Ritson as they waited for the decision.
Judge Marcus McDonnell had it 116-113 Vazquez, Michael Alexander scored 115-113 Ritson, while Terry O’Connor saw it controversially as 117-111 Ritson.
Ritson’s own promoter, Eddie Hearn, saw it as a victory for Vazquez.
“I’m just amazed,” Hearn told IFLTV. “It was just the weirdest thing because I had Vazquez who comfortably won the fight.
“And it was so strange because Ritson’s corner felt like they’d comfortably won the fight.”
Hearn added, “I love Lewis Ritson in every detail and it was an uncomfortable fight for him… but I just can’t see that Miguel Vazquez didn’t win the fight.
“And 117-111 is an absolute shame. It’s a shame. ”
And Hearn wasn’t the only one.
“I had lost Riston [by a] wide [margin]To be completely honest, “said Tony Bellew on Sky Sports. “An alarming lack of urgency from his corner, I thought, was strange.
“I let him lose. In my opinion, he was completely “old” tonight. Everything was at Vazquez’s pace, he dictated everything. ”
Ritson, like his team, believed they had done enough. But the 27-year-old, who fought for the first time in a year, admitted the fight was an “eye opener”.
“It was a very close fight,” Ritson admitted. “I thought he tapped most of his shots where I hit him with the cleaner shots.
“You choose what you like, don’t you?”
