Martin Keown warns Gareth Bale of Tottenham’s honeymoon

Martin Keown warned Gareth Bale about their honeymoon in Tottenham.

It was an emotional return to the club where he became a star after an argument with Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman had no intention of using the striker and allowed him to loan him out.

A keen fan for many years, Jose Mourinho was eager to sign the Welshman and Spurs.

And Bale was more than happy to make the move, but an injury prevented him from making his second debut.

But the 31-year-old was back in training this week and could face West Ham on Sunday.

Bale smiled when spotted with his new teammates and there is a feel-good factor at Tottenham right now after beating Manchester United 6-1.

Former Arsenal star Keown, however, has offered a word of caution.

He told the Daily Mail: “When I went home to Arsenal after seven years, I found that next to nothing had changed. Except for the strange change, Highbury was the same and so was the training ground.

“Gareth Bale has arrived in Tottenham after seven years in a brand new stadium and state-of-the-art training base. It’s very different from what he will remember when he said goodbye in 2013.

“It is crucial that the fans are the same. I had to win over the fans – some weren’t happy that I went to Aston Villa in the first place.

“But Bale is welcomed back with open arms. He’s the superstar who left so he could win everything with Real Madrid.

“This is his honeymoon period but I’m sure he realizes that the fans on the pitch will be looking for something special of him.

“I tried too hard in my first few games and Bale has to be careful.

“Anyone who has appeared in both the Premier League and La Liga will tell you which one is more demanding and which the Welshman has not played regularly in a while.”

Bale has had a tough time with injuries over the years and Keown insisted that Tottenham must be careful not to overwork the Welsh international.

He added, “I’m sure Jose Mourinho will consider managing his logs and the Spurs medical team will take care of it too.”

“You have treated Harry Kane’s return from a nasty injury with great care.

“Bale will have seen his new team tear Manchester United – the club he could have joined instead – apart and feel like they made the right call.

“He’ll want to get on the field and join the party, but he has to be easy going. At 31, he’s young enough to achieve great things with Tottenham. ”
