Dubai - Yasmine El Tohamy - Egyptian tennis player, Mayar Sherif registered a win at the annual Roland Garros Series in Paris on Wednesday.
Mayar Sherif became the first female representing Egypt in a major tennis tournament (senior-level) to record a win, after beating Colombian tennis prospect, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano at the Roland Garros Series.
The 24-year-old overtook Osorio Serrano with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph, in just her second major Grand Slam appearance in the first round.
Sherif is deemed the most accomplished Egyptian woman tennis player in history. She broke the record for the highest-ranked Egyptian woman in history when she ranked No.172 globally.
“I always imagined myself doing something good here in Paris. I’m just enjoying it, it’s such a dream to be here and to compete here. I’m going to try to enjoy it as much as I can,” commented Sherif after her win as per rolandgarros.com.

The rising Egyptian stated that she only had memories of Roland Garros as a spectator, “When [Roger] Federer won Roland-Garros, I was jumping in front of my TV set. That’s the most vivid memory I have of the tournament growing up.”
It is worth mentioning that last year, Sherif began the season unranked, after her graduation from Pepperdine University in the United States, where she played college tennis and made the NCAA semi-finals.
Within 10 months, she broke into the top 200 worldwide, completing a staggering 71 match-win haul.
