- Yasmine El Tohamy - Egyptian Premier League outfit Wadi Degla have appointed Cypriot coach Nikodimos Papavasiliou as the club’s new head coach.

The news comes just a few days following the dismissal of Greek manager Takis Gonias after the team’s poor run of form.

During his charge of the club, Gonias led the club in 54 games, winning 15 only which forced the club to sack him.

He will be replaced by Nikodimos Papavasiliou, who also arrives from Greece, having been in charge of Greek Super League outfit Panionios Athens.

The 49-year-old also had stints at Greece’s GS Ergotelis and OFI Crete, Slovakian club Slovan Bratislava, and a number of Cypriot clubs, most notably Apollon Limassol.

Papavasiliou has a lot of experience in the scouting area and academy, having worked as a scout for English clubs Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

As a player, Nikodimos, known as “Nikki”, played for the youth teams of Arsenal and Oldham Athletic, before becoming the first Cypriot to play in the Premier League, when he featured for Newcastle against Tottenham in 1993. Moreover, he played for a number of clubs in his home country like OFI, Apollon Limassol, and APOEL.

On the international level, Nikki has represented Cyprus for nine years from 1990−1999, making a total of 38 national caps and scoring five goals.

He will now become the latest foreign manager to lead Wadi Degla, who are having a disappointing season so far, sitting 17th in the league table. They were also knocked out of the Egypt Cup just a few days ago following a defeat to FC Masr.
