Wadi Degla have confirmed the signing of Dutch winger Rodney Antwi from Bulgaria’s top division side FC Tsarsko Selo Sofia.

Wadi Degla have been trying to strengthen their squad following their poor start to the season, which saw them win only three league games from their opening 14.

They decided to go big for their first winter signing as they managed to successfully bring Bulgarian’s league second top scorer Rodney Antwi.

The 24-year-old only lasted less than seven months in Bulgaria as his nine goals in 18 games earned him a move to Egypt-top flight side Wadi Degla.

Despite playing for a much smaller side, Antwi’s tally put him one goal ahead of Ali Sowe, who would have cost Al Ahly around €5 million, before the Reds pulled out of the deal to sign Aliou Badji instead.

The Dutch winger, who is of Ghanian descent, is an FC Utrecht product and was promoted to the senior team in 2014, scoring once in four Eredivisie games [a winner against Feyenoord Rotterdam], before moving to FC Volendam.

His one-and-a-half year stint in Volendam, saw him score nine goals while assisting seven in 65 games, guiding the club to the promotion playoffs, which they lost to NAC Breda.

During his time at the academy of FC Utrecht, Rodney managed to lift the 2016 U21 Eredivisie title and was coached by Ajax’s current manager Erik ten Hag.

Antwi will now have a new challenge in a new continent as he penned a three-and-a-half-year deal with Wadi Degla, for an undisclosed fee.

He could make his Egyptian Premier League debut when Wadi Degla host Zamalek on Wednesday, January 29.

In case he is registered by his Dutch passport, Antwi will become the first Dutch player to play in the Egyptian Premier League since Sidney Schmeltz, who featured for Petrojet during the 2014/2015 season.
