The Egyptian politician, Dr. Mustafa El-Feki, revealed some of the scenes behind the kingdom’s accession to the Arab League, explaining the condition of the founder, King Abdulaziz, to accept the idea of joining.
During his meeting on the “Middle Line” program on mbc channel, El-Feki explained that it was King Abdulaziz who established the custom for choosing Egyptian diplomats for the position of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, noting that he was hesitant about joining the Arab League at first.
He added that King Farouk tried to convince him of the idea, which the founding king responded to, and stipulated that the Egyptian diplomat, Abdel Rahman Azzam, be the first Secretary-General of the Arab League to accept the idea of joining, so that then choosing Egyptians for this position became a custom in the organization.
Al-Fiqi confirmed that the association of the nationality of the Secretary-General of the Arab League with the country hosting its headquarters remained a custom even after the headquarters was moved to Tunisia after the Arabs boycotted Egypt following the signing of the Camp David treaty with Israel at the end of the seventies of the last century.
