Based on Saudi Arabia Invitation President of the current session of the Islamic Summit, the Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was launched today, Sunday, to discuss developments in Afghanistan.

The Kingdom’s permanent representative to the organization, Dr. Saleh Al-Suhaibani, affirmed support for the “approach of dialogue in Afghanistan”, reiterating the call to “establish peace” in the country.

He called on “the Taliban and all parties to maintain security,” and urged “the international community to provide assistance to Afghanistan,” noting that “the Afghan people have suffered greatly from the scourge of war.”

The Saudi representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also called for a “comprehensive political settlement in Afghanistan.”

In turn, the Secretary-General of the organization, Dr. Yousef bin Uthaymeen, expressed concern about the situation in Afghanistan, hoping that calm would return to the country.

Bin Uthaymeen talked about the “escalating growth of humanitarian needs in Afghanistan,” noting that “reconciliation is the key to bringing peace” to the country, calling on “the Afghan authorities to strengthen dialogue.”

He also called for “not using Afghanistan as a haven for terrorism again”, and “working to end the violence.”

The organization said, in a statement on Saturday, that “at the invitation of Saudi Arabia, the head of the current session of the Islamic Summit, the organization, which includes in its membership 57 Muslim countries, will hold, on Sunday, an exceptional open-ended meeting at the level of permanent delegates, to study the current situation and events in Afghanistan.”

Last Monday, Saudi Arabia announced that it was interested in following up on the current events in Afghanistan after the Taliban movement took control of the Afghan capital, Kabul. The Kingdom expressed its hope for the stability of the situation in Afghanistan as soon as possible.

And Saudi Arabia confirmed, last Sunday, the arrival of members of its diplomatic mission in Afghanistan to the Kingdom after their evacuation.

Last June, Saudi Arabia sponsored the “Declaration of Peace in Afghanistan” conference, which brought together senior officials and scholars, and was hosted by the Muslim World League in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, to deepen reconciliation between the Afghan parties and lay the foundations for peace in the country.
