The world is witnessing a historical astronomical event on the evening of next Monday, December 21, represented in the great conjunction between the two gas giants, the planets “Jupiter and Saturn”, when they are seen apparently incredibly close to each other in the night sky, due to their alignment with the Earth in their own orbits.

The Afaq Association for Astronomy explained in a statement to “Previously” that “this great conjunction represents the first time since 1226, that is, 800 years ago, when the two planets lined up at night and sky watchers were able to watch the event in most parts of the world, despite the occurrence of a similar conjunction in the year 1623, except that it was not visible to skywatchers in most parts of the Earth.

She said: “The alignment occurs periodically between the two planets and the Earth in approximately every 20 years, with close differences, but this conjunction remains the greatest over the next sixty years, as the two planets will not appear so close in the sky until 2080.”

He pointed out that this great conjunction this year corresponds to the time of the winter solstice and the perpendicularity of the sun to the Tropic of Capricorn in the south of the Earth, which is the time of entering the astronomical winter in the northern hemisphere.

He emphasized that there is no correlation or influence from such an alignment as the conjunction can occur on any day of the year, and it is not a requirement that it always occurs at the time of the winter solstice.

In order to document this major event, the Afaq Association for Astronomy (ASFA), in cooperation with the Taif Governorate Municipality, will monitor this phenomenon, using modern telescopes from Al-Ruddaf Public Park, immediately after Maghrib prayer until dinner, and attendance will be free.
