The General Assembly of the Institute for Standardization and Metrology for Islamic Countries “SMIIC” agreed to postpone the institute’s elections, and the Institute’s Board of Directors agreed to extend the term of the Chairman of the Board of Directors to the Governor of the Saudi Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality, Dr. Saad bin Othman Al-Qasabi; Until the end of 2021.

This came during the presidency of Dr. Saad bin Othman Al-Qasabi; The meetings of the general assembly and the board of directors of the institute were held virtually with the participation of delegations of 39 Islamic countries, and 3 other countries with observer membership, in addition to the vice-presidents of the board of directors and the general secretariat of the institute.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also participated in the meeting with a delegation headed by Eng. Saud Al-Askar. Deputy Governor for Conformity and Quality, and the meeting discussed several important topics to ensure business continuity and ease of business at the institute during the pandemic that the world is currently going through.

Among those topics was approval to extend the term of office of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Vice-Presidents, Secretary-General, and Heads of Technical Institutes until the end of 2021.

The meeting also discussed the report of the Secretary-General for the past period, membership issues and the participation of new countries in the membership of the Institute, namely: Yemen, Chad and Bangladesh. In addition, the meeting approved the strategic plan of the Islamic Institute for the period 2021 – 2030 AD, the report of the external financial auditor (2019), the budget for 2021 AD, and the share of countries’ contributions for the same year.

It is noteworthy that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been elected to chair the Board of Directors of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) for the period (2018-2020), and with this decision, the Kingdom’s presidency of the Council will extend until the end of next year 2021 AD.
