A Saudi human rights group announced that the Saudi activist detained in the kingdom, Loujain Al-Hathloul, “is currently a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.”

The account of “Detainees of Conscience” (concerned with the cases of detainees in the Kingdom) said on its Twitter account, on Sunday, “Lujain Al-Hathloul (detained for two years) is currently a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize,” without details.

According to the award website, the winners for this year will be announced between 5 and 12 October.

There are 318 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2020, including 211 individuals and 107 organizations, and that number is the fourth largest number of candidates ever, as the current record of 376 candidates was reached in 2016.

The “Prisoners of Conscience” account indicated that “Alia and Lina Al-Hathloul (Friday) handed over the Freedom Prize that was awarded by French human rights organizations to their sister, Loujain, in appreciation of her human rights efforts.”

On Friday, Alia and Lina, the sisters of Al-Hathloul, received the “Freedom” award, which was awarded by an international committee in France to their sister who was arrested in the Kingdom two years ago, according to the award’s website.

On May 15, 2018, the Saudi authorities arrested a number of prominent human rights activists, most notably Loujain, Samar Badawi, Nassima Al-Sada, Nouf Abdel Aziz, and Maya Al-Zahrani.

Human rights reports at the time attributed the reasons for the arrest to their defense of women’s rights, in exchange for official accusations, including compromising the country’s security.

Saudi Arabia faces international criticism regarding the conditions of freedom of expression and human rights, but it has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to “implementing the law with transparency.”
