British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been taken into intensive care after being admitted to hospital on Sunday for the coronavirus.

Initially government officials said Mr Johnson was admitted to a London hospital as a "precautionary measure", and that he remained in charge of the government.

He had been suffering from persistent symptoms including a high temperature and a cough for days.

As of 7pm on Sunday, Mr Johnson was moved to the intensive care unit at St Thomas's hospital in London.

The prime minister remains conscious at this time, but he is understood to have been moved to intensive care unit as a precaution should he require ventilation to aid his recovery.

‘Since Sunday evening, the Prime Minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus," a Downing Street spokesperson said.

"Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital."

"The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary."

"The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."
