Nepal has borne the brunt of the disaster, with 626 people confirmed dead and 2,426 still unaccounted for, the Kathmandu Post reported Saturday, citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Search teams continued to recover bodies swept downstream by raging rivers, with some found as far away as Nepal’s border with India.

Chitwan and Nawalparasi East are among the hardest-hit areas, while dozens of bodies have also been recovered in Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot following the overflow of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, major waterways originating in the Himalayas.

Foreign nationals are among the missing. India said 320 of its citizens remain unaccounted for in Nepal, making Indians the largest known group of foreign nationals still missing.

“As far as the number of people whom we are not able to contact or who are missing, the figure at this point in time is 320,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said Friday.

Around 100 people of Indian origin who may hold other nationalities also remain uncontactable, he said.

Dozens of Indian nationals have been rescued, including 63 people working at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project.

In China, seven people have been killed and 554 remain missing, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Authorities cautioned that the number of missing could change significantly as rescue teams locate people who have been unable to communicate after floods damaged electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.

Nepalese authorities said 2,301 people have been rescued or treated for injuries, with the majority of survivors located in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.

A total of 4,811 personnel have been deployed across affected regions for rescue and recovery operations, while 27 police officers remain out of contact.

Nepal has also agreed to allow international search-and-rescue teams into the country as concerns grow over foreign nationals caught in the disaster.

The Independent Power Producers’ Association said 934 people linked to 11 flood-damaged hydropower sites in Nepal remain unaccounted for, according to Xinhua.

The International Red Cross estimated that around 93,000 people may have been affected, with assessments continuing in areas that remain difficult to reach.

The death toll and number of missing are expected to change as rescue teams gain access to isolated areas and communications are restored.
