BANGKOK, Nov 11 — The Royal Thai Army has accused Cambodia of breaching a joint peace declaration after confirming that a landmine blast which injured four Thai soldiers in Si Sa Ket province was caused by newly planted explosives, The Nation reported today.
Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suwaree told the Thai daily that the explosion in Huai Ta Maria, Kantharalak district, was “a clear violation of the joint peace declaration and a sign of renewed hostility”.
The blast injured four soldiers — Sergeant Major First Class Therdsak Samapong, who lost his right ankle and remains in critical condition; Private Vajira Panthana, who suffered chest pain; Private Apirak Srichomchai, who sustained shrapnel wounds to his legs; and Private Anucha Sujaree, who suffered eye irritation from dust or possible chemical residue. All are being treated at a local hospital.
Maj Gen Winthai said the explosion took place during a routine patrol in an area formerly occupied by Cambodian troops before their withdrawal following earlier clashes.
Thai forces had taken full control of the area on October 17, reinforcing security through mine-clearing operations, barbed-wire fencing and regular patrols.
However, on November 9, Thai troops discovered sections of the barbed-wire barrier had been removed.
A patrol team with army engineers was sent the next morning to inspect the site when the landmine detonated around 8.30am.
A joint team of military personnel, police forensic experts, and local officers later inspected the blast site and found a crater 55cm wide and 18cm deep, fragments of a PMN-2 landmine, and three more PMN-2 mines planted nearby.
“Evidence confirms that the minefield was newly laid after the barbed wire had been removed, specifically targeting Thai troops who regularly patrol the area,” said Winthai.
“This act demonstrates Cambodia’s insincerity in de-escalating tensions and reflects a hostile attitude. It clearly violates the joint declaration and will inevitably affect Thailand’s position and related agreements.”
The incident adds to recent tension along the Thai-Cambodian border, where efforts to maintain peace have been strained by sporadic clashes and mutual allegations of territorial incursions.
